The Native American culture known as The Mississippian, or Mound Builder, rose in the Mississippi Valley around 700 AD and lasted until approximately 1400 AD. The primary site of the Mississippians was at Cahokia, near present-day St. Louis. The main settlement in the New Madrid area has come to be known as the Lilbourn Fortified Village Site, remnants of which can be seen today near New Madrid County Central High. The museum is fortunate to have hundreds of items from the Mississippian Period from pottery to jewelry to stone tools and points.
